This custom storage unit fulfills numerous functions: an entry closet; a wet bar; open and closed storage for books and objects; and a designated desk for everyday use.
Addressing this range of needs in a single unit would typically necessitate a massive volume, dominating the space it sits in. Pushing in the other direction, this project explores the means of achieving a more delicate presence.
To reduce the feeling of weight, the scale of the overall unit is broken down into a composition of discrete elements. An open storage unit of thin steel tubes and plates is perched on the floor, delicately anchoring to the wall. Wall-hung cabinets are then gently inserted between the thin vertical structure, one assigned to each function. Each of these cabinets is clad with mirror-backed reeded glass doors and placed to maintain a slight gap between each of the components.
Through the decomposition of volume and reflective materiality, the unit is a study of lightness, dissolving into the space as a play of light and shadow.
